As part of our four night stay in Strahan, we used one of the days to go for a drive and explore the West Coast of Tasmania. We didn’t quite get to see everything, but were able to tick off a lot of attractions and sights.
Our day started by driving to Zeehan. Going to Zeehan is like stepping back in time. It is a former mining boom town and still has that older charm. One of the main attractions is the West Coast Heritage Centre, a museum that tells the story and history of the West Coast. We didn’t have a chance to visit, but have heard great things. There is a great coffee van outside the museum where you can look at some old locomotives while enjoying a hot drink.

Just outside of Zeehan is the Spray Tunnel, a 100m long abandoned railway tunnel. The road to the tunnel isn’t the greatest, but once you get there it is an easy walk to explore. We had seen a photo on Instagram showing heaps of glow worms in the tunnel. Unfortunately it wasn’t like that in real life, but we still spotted some glow worms on our walk.

Our next stop was Lake Mackintosh, a Hydro Tasmania lake 5km out of Tullah. The weather wasn’t the greatest on the day we visited, but was still beautiful to look at. The camping in the area looked great as well, somewhere we would love to go and stay sometime soon. We made a quick stop in Tullah and kept going toward Rosebery, a mining town nestled deep in a valley. After a quick food stop at the local bakery, the weather had cleared up so we decided to tackle the Montezuma Falls walk.

Montezuma Falls is Tasmania’s highest waterfall, with the walk one of the 60 great short walks of Tasmania. One tip from us, don’t trust the distance on the sign! According to the sign, the walk was four hours one way, but for us it was more around 5.5km. We thought we were lost as the walk was taking longer than anticipated but lucky for some fellow travellers, we were guided the right way towards the waterfall. The walk was relatively easy for us and was well worth it for the view when we got to the waterfall. Unfortunately the suspension bridge was closed when we completed the walk, but still had a great view from the platform and we were so glad we decided to keep going on the walk.

There is plenty of parking at Montezuma Falls, with drop toilets at the start. If you are up for a 10km plus walk, we would definitely recommend.
After our walk, we were cold and exhausted so it was time to head back to Strahan. A great day out exploring, and as we didn’t get to see everything, it gives us a great excuse to come back!
